easy cel-shading tutorial by chirart easy cel-shading tutorial by chirart
I have been getting an inordinate amount of comments asking how I cel-shade, so I decided to cap the process of me doing it on a simple headshot.

It's very pretty simple.

Done in Photoshop.

Original character from Sfeer Theory, property of me.

EDIT: Because a few asked in the comments, for those wondering what Linear Burn does, this page explains it nicely:

The Linear Burn blend mode... decreases brightness to darken the base color and reflect the blend color. It is also similar to the Multiply blend mode, but produces a much more intense result.

Basically you can do the same thing with the shading on Multiply, but I like Linear Burn better because it absorbs the colours into the shades a lot more clearly =)

If you don't mind me asking I was wondering-
How did you make the picture look so sharp and crisp looking in the last panel? Was it certain settings in photoshop?

ooh, i know this is an old comment, but i think she was just screencapping all the images before it (print-screen to capture an image of your whole computer screen, so she could show the photoshop tools and windows as she worked) and the last image was the actual picture as a jpg or png. screencaps are typically not as quality as the actual image, so that's why the finished product doesn't quite match!

At the end of the tutorial, the lines in the last panel seem much sharper than the one before it. Do you just use the sharpen tool or something else I am unaware of? (I'm having difficulty getting sharp lineart, hence my question)
